Can I still apply for the Canada Greener Homes Grant?
Applications for the Canada Greener Homes Grant ran from May 2021 to February 2024, and the final deadline for participants to send in their documentation was December 31, 2025 [NRCan, grant at a glance]. The program is closed to everyone now. NRCan has since published what it paid out.
Its summary page is dated February 2026. It counts 406,334 households that completed their retrofits and received a grant, and $1.8 billion issued in total [NRCan, grant at a glance]. Those totals were not quite final: 22,583 applications were still being processed when the page was published.
Some federal help is still available, for narrower groups: households with low to median incomes, through the Canada Greener Homes Affordability Program, and Ontario homes heated with oil, through a free heat pump install.
How much was the Canada Greener Homes Grant?
Up to $5,000 for energy-efficient upgrades, plus up to $600 toward an EnerGuide home energy evaluation before and after the retrofits [NRCan, 2021 launch release]. When the grant launched in June 2021, NRCan said up to 700,000 homeowners were eligible for it.
Actual payouts sat below that ceiling. NRCan's February 2026 summary puts the average grant at $4,436 per household [NRCan, grant at a glance].
Fewer homes were paid than the launch figure allowed for, too. The 406,334 households paid by February 2026 are about 58% of the 700,000 that NRCan described as eligible in 2021 [NRCan, grant at a glance].
Ontario's share of the grant money
Ontario homeowners received 164,447 grants worth $748.2 million, by the same February 2026 count [NRCan, grant at a glance]. Set against the $1.8 billion issued across Canada, that is a little over 40% of all the grant money.
Ontario's grants also ran slightly larger than the national figure. Divide the province's total by its number of grants and the result lands a little above the $4,436 national average. NRCan counts grants for Ontario but households for Canada, so the comparison is approximate.
Ontario, by NRCan's February 2026 count: 164,447 grants issued, $748.2 million paid, and heat pumps the top retrofit **[NRCan, grant at a glance]**.
The upgrades the grant paid for most
The grant covered retrofits such as replacing windows and doors, adding insulation, sealing air leaks and improving heating and cooling systems [NRCan, 2021 launch release]. NRCan's counts of the five most common show what homeowners chose most often [NRCan, grant at a glance]:
| Retrofit | NRCan count, February 2026 |
|---|---|
| Heat pumps | 229,000 |
| Windows and doors | 145,817 |
| Home insulation | 74,207 |
| Air sealing | 72,115 |
| Solar panels | 38,500 |
Heat pumps lead by a wide margin: NRCan counted more heat pump retrofits than insulation and air sealing jobs put together.
Two of those upgrades carry over to the federal offers still running. Insulation and heat pumps are the examples NRCan gives for the Affordability Program's no-cost retrofits [NRCan, Affordability Program], and Ontario's offer for oil-heated homes is a heat pump install [NRCan, participating provinces].
Who qualifies for the Canada Greener Homes Affordability Program?
Homeowners and tenants with low to median incomes. The program gives those households no-cost retrofits, such as insulation and heat pumps, and it has been delivered through participating provinces and territories since 2025, with extra support for Indigenous organizations [NRCan, Affordability Program].
That is a different group from the grant's. The grant was for homeowners [NRCan, 2021 launch release]; this program also serves tenants, but only inside that income band. The money moves differently too. Grant households finished their retrofits and then received a grant [NRCan, grant at a glance]. Here the retrofit itself costs the household nothing.
There is no federal application to fill in. Households apply through the program in their own province or territory, and the Government of Canada is not taking applications from households [NRCan, Affordability Program]. Before you count on it, check whether Ontario appears on NRCan's list of participating provinces and territories. If it doesn't, there is no Ontario program to apply to.
Free heat pump installation for Ontario homes heated with oil
If your Ontario house heats with oil, you may be able to have a heat pump system put in for free. NRCan lists a direct installation offer for eligible Ontario homeowners, valued at up to $25,000: up to $15,000 in federal funding and up to $10,000 in provincial funding, delivered with its partner, the Independent Electricity System Operator (IESO) [NRCan, participating provinces].
Measured against the old grant, that is up to five times the $5,000 retrofit cap. None of it is paid to you, though. Apart from a $250 bonus cheque, no money goes directly to the applicant [NRCan, participating provinces].
NRCan last updated that page in August 2026. Confirm with the IESO that applications are still open before you plan a heating change around the offer.
Is the Canada Greener Homes Loan closed too?
The loan has closed as well. CMHC stopped taking new applications through its portal on October 2, 2025 [CMHC]. NRCan says the funding is fully committed and new loan applications cannot be approved, though homeowners who already have an approved loan are unaffected [NRCan, Greener Homes Loan].
Ontario's provincial rebates sit outside all of these federal programs. They run through the Home Renovation Savings program, delivered by Save on Energy and Enbridge Gas with support from the Ontario government [Save on Energy], and our separate guide to that program covers its rebates and rules.
Calls and door knocks that use the Greener Homes name
The Government of Canada, NRCan, ENERGY STAR and EnerGuide never phone, email or knock on the door asking to enter your home to inspect, sell or rent heating and cooling products [NRCan, Affordability Program]. NRCan posts that warning on the Affordability Program's own page, and the dates and application routes above give you a quick test for any pitch that leans on the Greener Homes name:
- •The grant stopped taking applications in February 2024 [NRCan, grant at a glance], so nobody can sign you up for it.
- •The Affordability Program takes applications through a program in your province or territory [NRCan, Affordability Program], so a stranger at the door cannot enrol you.
- •The Greener Homes Loan approves no new applications [NRCan, Greener Homes Loan].
- •Ontario's free heat pump install for oil-heated homes is something you apply for, through NRCan and the IESO [NRCan, participating provinces].
A caller or visitor who claims to be from one of those offices and asks to come in and look at your heating system is not from them **[NRCan, Affordability Program]**.
Insulation and heating work inside a bigger renovation
If neither of those federal offers fits your home, insulation and other energy upgrades share one budget with everything else in the renovation, and the sensible time to add them is while the walls are open anyway.
In the basements we finish, the foundation walls get spray foam or rigid insulation, and moisture is dealt with at the source (waterproofing, vapour barriers, drainage) before any wall is finished.
On a house renovation, insulation is one of several trades working in the house. A dedicated project manager coordinates all trades, so the energy work sits on the same schedule as the rest of the job.
If the house heats with oil and you have applied for the free heat pump install, tell us at the first visit, when we come to the house, measure, and talk through budget before anything is drawn. NRCan and the IESO deliver that system [NRCan, participating provinces], so its installation has to be part of the renovation plan from the start.
