It depends most on how much tile goes in and how the shower is built. A tub with a tiled surround takes less tile and labour than a walk-in shower tiled to the ceiling. The layout comes next, since fixtures left where they are need no new piping. We measure the room at the free consultation and price each of those choices separately in the quote.
Ours run 10 to 14 working days, 12 on average. How much of the room is rebuilt sets where yours lands: a refresh over sound walls finishes sooner than a room stripped to the studs for a new shower and a heated floor. Tile and fixtures are picked at the selection step, before demolition, so the tiler is not left waiting on a decision.
Often, yes. Ontario ties building permits to construction and renovation, and each municipality publishes its own list of the work that needs one, which we check for your town. New circuits and moved outlets are a separate filing with the Electrical Safety Authority, and a bathroom can need both. We file them and book every inspection, so you never visit a municipal office.
The wet areas: shower walls, shower floors and tub surrounds, waterproofed with Schluter or Laticrete systems before any tile is set. The guarantee is in writing and reads "No leaks, ever." It covers that membrane work, and every project is also backed by our warranty.

Yes, for both trades. Plumbing is a compulsory trade in Ontario, so drain, vent and supply lines need a certified plumber or a registered apprentice. Only a Licensed Electrical Contractor, or an electrician employed by one, can be hired to do the wiring. On our bathrooms, both are our own licensed staff.

Yes, where its drain can reach the house's existing drain lines. That decides where the ensuite fits, often more than how much floor the bedroom can spare. If a wall has to come out to make room, Ontario advises checking that whoever prepares the permit drawings is registered on its QuARTS public registry.

Its drains usually have to run under the concrete slab to reach the main drain. The cut, the length of the trench and the patch afterwards are what move the cost, so a bathroom close to the main drain costs less to plumb. Where the house drain runs above the basement floor, a macerating pump takes the place of the trench.

A refresh keeps every fixture where it is and replaces the vanity, toilet, taps, lighting and finishes. In a full remodel the room comes down to the framing, so the layout can change and the shower gets new backing and a new membrane. A refresh suits a layout that already works. A remodel is the time for a heated floor or a bigger shower, while the room is open.

Demolition comes first, then the rough-in, when new pipes, wiring and boxes go in while the studs are bare. Once the rough-in passes its inspections, backer board and the waterproofing membrane go up, then the tile, then the vanity, toilet, taps and glass. Paint is the last coat.

Good to KnowUnder Ontario's permit rule, a bathroom stops being cosmetic work once its plumbing or framing changes. A toilet moved across the room, a shower drain shifted to another wall or a wall taken out to fit a larger shower each starts with drawings and a permit application.
Wet-room wiring follows its own rules. Every outlet within 1.5 metres of the sink needs GFCI protection, which sets how the vanity wall is wired, and the heated floor's smart thermostat needs its spot on that plan too. Our own licensed electricians wire all of it.
The walls close on an inspection. ESA's rough-in inspection takes place once the new circuits and outlet boxes are in, before insulation, vapour barrier or drywall can hide them, so backer board and tile are booked for after it. With our own plumbers and electricians on the rough-in, no subcontractor's calendar sits between the trades and that visit.
Amy An needed her master bathroom finished before her in-laws arrived from out of town. It was done sooner than other contractors had told her it could be, without the extra cost they had mentioned for a rush, and she calls the team organized and tidy from design ideas to the final walkthrough. Paul Moniz, whose two bathrooms we redid, says Max took care of every small detail, and he already has a third project in mind.
Every shower and tub surround gets a Schluter or Laticrete waterproofing membrane before the first tile is set, and that layer is what the written "No leaks, ever" guarantee covers. Heated floors are tile work too: a Nuheat or Ditra-Heat system goes under the floor tile, with a smart thermostat on the wall.
Older bathrooms add a step: once the old tile is off, the backing and the pipes behind it are checked, and anything worn is fixed before the membrane goes on. Kathleen Rusk's bathroom was in a century home. Her review says Max had "some challenges" with it and that the way it turned out was phenomenal.
We do not put a percentage on a bathroom's return, because resale depends on the house and the market. What a future buyer can be shown is the work behind the walls: a membrane under a written guarantee, plumbing that passed its inspection, and an ESA Certificate of Acceptance for the wiring.
Keep that certificate. ESA tells homeowners whose contractor filed the notification to ask for a copy, and it answers an insurer's or a buyer's questions later. Our blog post on bathroom costs and ROI goes through the figures this page leaves out.
